Water flowing over Canyon Falls
Canyon Falls

Description

Canyon Falls is a well-known falls in a roadside park on US-41 south of L'Anse near the town of Alberta. The falls are on the Sturgeon River, and are well worth a stop if you're in the area.

Warning! There are canyon walls around these falls that you, or your kids, could fall from. Stay on the tourist trail, and you'll be reasonably safe. If you venture off the tourist trail, there are no railings—keep an eye on your kids.

From the parking lot, a well-developed tourist trail takes you alongside the river and to the falls. The viewing "platform" is actually a flat piece of exposed rock on top of the canyon wall. Beyond the current viewing platform you should easily be able to find the remnants of an older, and longer, tourist trail.

The older tourist trail was in use, I think, the first time I visited these falls back in the late '80s. I don't know why the trail has been truncated to its current length. In any case, I highly recommend a walk down the old trial; you'll get some nice views of the canyon. But watch your kids, or don't take your kids, because the old railings are gone in some places and rotten in others.

Directions

US-41 is the main drag between Marquette and L'Anse. You'll easily find it on the map. About 20 miles or so south of L'Anse, US-41 makes a 90-degree turn to the north. The falls (or the roadside park) is about 4-5 miles north of that turn, and about 2 miles south of the old town of Alberta. The roadside park is on the west side of the road.
